You weren’t made to go work for a company. The whole idea of a job as a career is barely a century old. It was an invention of the Industrial Revolution.
That isn’t far back. What’s happening now isn’t new. It’s a return to what we always were: people in charge of our own work.
We worked in small groups, and we were in charge of ourselves. Everyone had a role. Nobody was just an underling. Everyone owned their craft, and the whole thing worked because everyone was needed.
We’re heading back to something like that. What’s happening isn’t destruction. It’s a temporary structure coming apart, the way it was always going to. Giant companies, jobs, careers: a useful invention for a while, not the final form, and not something we’re obliged to preserve.
And what’s coming is exciting. But if you can’t picture it, if the only future you can imagine is the one that’s ending, then it’s frightening. That’s where we come in.
We have a glimpse of the future. And that is enough.
We don’t know exactly what it looks like. We don’t know exactly how we get there. But we have a glimpse, and the rest we can figure out.
That’s why you’re here. That’s what this is. We’re going to do it.
We’re going to figure it out, and we’re going to help other people see what’s ahead. We’ll discover it together. And we’ll find there was nothing to fear.
